Interesting factoid below. We have used 530 of the gigatonnes we can dump and that leaves only 270 before we become seriously unsustainable as a species. What we need is an index of the relative "dirtiness" of each fossil fuel. And a world clock showing how many days we have until the last reserve of dumping space (270 more gigatonnes) is gone. And a per capita chart of who is using up this reserve and at what rate. Perhaps someone is already doing this? The report also quantified the greenhouse-gas carrying capacity of the atmosphere if we’re to have a better than even chance of avoiding 2C warming. The threshold is 1,000 gigatonnes of which natural methane accounts for 200. Of the remaining 800 gigatonnes we have already emitted 530. That leaves just 270 gigatonnes remaining. Existing known fossil fuel reserves, if burned, would create 2,700 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases. What that means is we will have to leave 90 per cent of our known fossil fuel reserves untouched.
