One VERY interesting fact in Paul Greens Jeffrey Hunter book is that Jeffrey was offered the lead in Checkmate but turned it down. The original concept by thriller writer Eric Ambler was about a private detective, Don Corey, his girlfriend, and her father, Dr Carl Hyatt, an Oxford educated professor of criminology. Anthony George from The Untouchables was cast as Corey and portly bearded British character actor Sebastian Cabot as Hyatt and Joan OBrien was to play the girlfriend. But they had Doug McClure under contract and his previous series, Overland Trail had just been cancelled and they wanted to put him to another show, so they did away with the girlfriend character, much to Amblers annoyance (He quit the project) and created the character of Coreys junior partner, Jed Sills, for Doug to play. But before that Jeffrey Hunter must have been offered the role of Don Corey and having turned it down, agreed to this guest star role.
