Interesting post from Horizon Herbs . . . Oshá cultivation has been attempted throughout the years with little success overall, from what I understand. Apparently, its going well in SW Oregon. Some of our experiments with various harvesting techniques and transplantations are still playing themselves out. So far weve found success with transplantation in the spring of the live root, and our testing of one particular traditional harvesting technique has shown mixed results in terms of encouraging regrowth of the remaining root system. That said, I believe that the use of this herb is fully sustainable as a REGIONALLY SPECIFIC HERB, not as a national or international trade commodity. True, its specific habitat is, if nothing else, not expanding. I could surmise that its habitat has declined due to drought, deforestation, and very recent severe fires BUT I have only seen it come back MORE prolifically in these areas. In fact, this year is an exceptional flowering year in Arizona. Assuming most of these flowering plants have been there for several years, there are numerous years I can recall where only 5% of the population, or less, flowered. Nonetheless, I would say cultivation of this herb is a great idea and should even make for an easier harvest, and hopefully, stabilize the price of this herb (most expensive dry herb in the Southwest).
