Interesting reflection on the discussion staged in Glasgows Celtic Connections festival on The impact of independence for Scotland on its culture by Donny Donnison in todays Scottish Review scottishreview.net/DavidDonnison141.shtml: Lesley [Riddoch], in a last-minute comment, said she was really more interested in decentralising power within Scotland than in transferring power from Westminster to Edinburgh; a thought that would have been well worth exploring. Somebody from the floor, in the few seconds permitted for audience participation, said that, when viewed from Stornoway, Edinburgh and Glasgow were about as distant and unresponsive as Westminster and Whitehall; another thought worth exploring. One thing at least I learnt from this meeting. Grass roots democracy and the dethroning of elites are unlikely to be more welcome among the elites of an independent Scotland than they are among those of Westminster and Whitehall.
