Interesting short article. Reader Comment: Everyone seriouly interested in questions of racial identification should read Nell Irvin Painters The History of White People. The author skips blithely over the fact that at one point.the Irish were not universally considered to be whte. Think about that for a second. What group of people are paler than the Irish? Scandinavians, maybe. Identifying yourself as white and someone else as NOT white has always been, primarily, a way of asserting your superiority. To a certain extent I agree with the reader, however I dont think such a broad brush should be applied to all consider themselves White and Hispanic. If youre naturally blonde, blue eyed and pale skinned with straight hair what do you call yourself? Obviously Hispanics who look White tend to be genetically/racially Caucasian. Therein lies the problem with the ethnicity vs race debate. Ethnicity is shared cultural, social and language ancestry. Race was/is defined by shared genetic lineage. Or, we can just make mutts like my parents did. Then we can all just talk about the important stuff, like Doctor Who premiering in August.
