Interesting situation that presented these days in the region of Central America and Mexico . Volcanoes like Popocatepetl ( Mexico ) , The Pacaya ( Guatemala ), San Miguel ( El Salvador ), San Cristobal, Cerro Black and Momotombo ( Nicaragua ) and the Poas volcano ( Costa Rica ) have shown significant activity . These volcanoes are aligned (see figure) in a direction that is parallel to a complex quasi plate boundary ( Middle America Trench ), with subduction of the Cocos plate beneath the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate . This subduction zone is main responsible for at least two super- important phenomena : Volcanoes and Earthquakes . Well, about this area plus the volcanic activity mentioned , have been reported at least 16 seismic events in the past seven days (located approximately at the sites marked with red star with a yellow border in the figure) with greater than 4 degrees magnitudes, one reaching 5.8 degrees ( red star without yellow border ) . It seems that this is a time in which the above-mentioned countries should maintain an alert , at least yellow , and inform the public about the importance of staying informed and ways to stay prepared to minimize adverse effects ( even as exercise in self defense emergency )
