Interesting story as family reunification can be a beautiful thing, but I need help in processing the background of the story. - Kenneth Good (the father) was an anthropologist of the Yanomami. The article tells us that the father did fall in love with the Yanomami culture, extending his stay and research for years. The father was later gifted a child bride (9-12 yrs old according to Wikipedia). The bride then relocated to New Jersey with her husband and there they lived for years, producing three children. Am I right to think that theres something strange in this? I cannot imagine this arrangement, given the male white anthropologists age (30 plus when he was gifted a bride), and privilege. It might be true that gifts cannot be refused, but it is hard for me to imagine, that this case would be plausible if details are slightly changed: would a woman anthropologist place herself in such complex position?; would a non-white anthropologist accept such a gift? If youve read similar cases, please forward them to me. I would like to better understand such situations. True, nothing can be done anymore because its over and done, but I think we have to continue to critically think about anthropologys history of whiteness and privilege. - Son now reconnects with the other half of his identity. His efforts are local, and his funding is sourced from a global audience. Such efforts have already been critiqued for their tendency to be too abstract and universalizing. I am sure the son wants only the best for his mothers tribe, and I wish him all the energy that he needs, and I hope the pressures that come from funding sources that speak a universalizing discourse will not affect his sincere intentions too badly. - What a title.
