Interesting study, but too many variables to be definitive. I would like to have seen them give the parents IQ tests also, since there is a genetic component to IQ. Its certainly possible that the spanker parents have an overall lower IQ. I didnt see the actual paper, so maybe they did evaluate that variable, but if not, they should have. Also, the state of mind the parents are in during the spanking probably plays a huge role on the child. If you are spanking a child in anger it probably has a greater negative impact than if spanking in a calm controlled strictly as a punishment way. I cant speak for IQ, but the short-term and long term effects of spanking probably vary greatly depending on the personality of the child and the self-control of the parent. A super sensitive child with a parent or parents who are prone to losing control probably should not be spanked. I would not spank my child because my child would probably end up being a super sensitive little flower like I was, and Im afraid I would lose control. I am supremely confident I would find plenty of other ways to screw up my child though:-)
