Intermediate Football League! (Round Eight) Carrickmacross 1.13 Inniskeen 3.07. The Emmets snatched a draw in the last few minutes of this intriguing encounter with Inniskeen at Emmet Park on Wednesday evening before a good crowd of spectators. Due to injuries and exams the Carrickmacross team was at its lightest regarding players and they lined out without a number of key-men that included Andrew O’Rourke, Ferdia Holland, Conor McEnaney, Aaron Murray, Killian Cromwell and Stephen Gollogly! Through their absence; other players got to show their value; while at the same time gaining experience and valuable playtime! Although the Emmets were fastest out of the traps with an early point from Sean Downey; the Grattans were full of running and initially “tested the water” with their first attack which went wide of the posts. Barely had the ball been kicked out when they were back with another raid and out of the blue a harmless looking ball came into the Emmets small square and among the hesitancy of the defence; an Inniskeen fist popped up to send the ball to the Carrick net! Similar swops on the Emmets saw the visitor’s record three wides on the trot before they registered a point. The next two phases of play belonged to Carrick and a wide effort was followed with a point from a free-kick by Peter O’Hanlon. Inniskeen were still the persistent side and another shot went wide before a fisted attempt at a point; rebounded of the crossbar and deceived all except the Inniskeen full forward; who accepted the opportunity to depart the ball to the Emmets net for goal number two. Another wide for the Grattans preceded an exchange of points with Sean Downey finding the target for the home side from a free-kick. Again the sides traded points and Sean Downey was on the mark once more with his third minor of the first half. A further point from Peter O’Hanlon narrowed the margin to four-points but Inniskeen shooting continued to let them down and they concluded the first half with three more wides; nine in total! Meanwhile The Emmets missed from a free-kick but James Conlon managed an important point when he rounded off a good strong move before the half time whistle sounded; Carrickmacross 0.06 Inniskeen 2.03! Lo and behold; the second half commenced exactly as the first when Inniskeen capitalised on some indecision and scrambled another goal to put them in the driving seat! A wide ball apiece came prior to another Sean Downey point to cut the deficit while Inniskeen did themselves no favours with two more wides. An excellent Peter O’Hanlon free-kick whizzed over the bar for the Emmets which was followed by their fourth and final wide of the game! Grattans were wide again but finally they came good with a point form play which was quickly cancelled by the influential Peter O’Hanlon. In a period of scoring the Grattans added two-points on the scoreboard which left them 3.06 to 0.09 ahead. The Emmets rang the changes and a few belated replacements seemed to produce a response; they were now beginning to impose their game on the Grattans; resulting in a penalty kick being awarded to Sean Downey when he was tumbled to ground; he swiftly regained his composure to shoot low and hard to the net! A super free-kick from Peter O’Hanlon got the home support in tune; Sean Downey with a point left the minimum margin but Inniskeen replied with a valuable point to put them two up! The watchful Adam Waller was on alert from a breaking ball and slotted over lovely point as he can do. Inniskeen still going strong but returned another wide and then they conceded a free-kick on the stand-side which Peter O’Hanlon slipped between the uprights for a cool point; to level the match. With twilight looming Inniskeen made a gallant effort to win the points but stern defending saw them kick two hopeful efforts well wide of target; seventeen in all! There was a mixture of relief and delight around Emmet Park as the referee blew the full time whistle with both teams pondering what might have been; if only!!!!!! Emmets; Team!
