The theme of International Day for Biological Diversity 2014 is Island Biodiversity. The theme coincided with the International Year of Small Island Developing States which was designated by the United Nations General Assembly. The day was celebrated with the aim of spreading awareness on biodiversity and the importance of preserving it in villages and islands. About International Day for Biological Diversity--- • Initially from 1993 to 2000, International Day for Biological Diversity was celebrated by the UN General Assembly annually on 29 December – the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity. • In 2000, UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to celebrate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. • The day was celebrated to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
