Intern | Mentorship – Art Gallery of Mississauga Paid Internship sponsored by RBC The RBC Museum Internship for Emerging Professionals program is administered by the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) with the generous financial support from the Royal Bank of Canada’s RBC Foundation. The Art Gallery of Mississauga is a participant in this programme. The purpose of this program is to provide quality, mentored internships and enhanced learning experiences for emerging museum professionals, which includes graduates of museum and arts studies programs, curators, conservators, and arts administrators. There is a growing need for new young professionals in the museum sector, especially with retirements, sector changes and the need to reflect a more diverse work force in museums and art galleries across Canada. Through the CMA, internships of four to six (4-6) months are created in museums or art galleries in Canada to provide practical skills development in a professional and supervised setting. The interns benefit by participating in career exchanges and networking opportunities at the CMA National Conference. The Following Criteria are specified by the programme: Interns are recruited by the approved museum or art gallery. Eligibility criteria for interns are as follows: • Intern must be a Canadian citizen. • Intern must be a recent graduate (within past 24 months) from a museums studies program and/or arts studies, curatorial, conservation or an arts administrators program. • Intern must be willing to commit to the full duration of the internship. • Intern must also be available to attend the CMA National Conference. (Registration costs to be paid by CMA.) • Intern must not be a current or previous employee of the museum/organization. Applying to the Art Gallery of Mississauga: • Incumbent will be required to attend the Canadian Museums Association Conference as a representative of the Art Gallery of Mississauga on April 7, 2014 and a Ceremony at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) on April 9, 2014 • Applicants of diverse cultural backgrounds and identity are encouraged to apply. • Must have recently completed Arts Administration, Museum Studies or Arts History as specified above in this call. Internship Description The Curatorial Assistant | Lead Docent Animateur will learn all operations and programming practices of a not-for-profit gallery, giving them a wealth of experience in all aspects of running a “Class A” public art gallery. The incumbent will focus on two tracks of focus: Phase 1 - creating an exciting, positive experience for Gallery visitors by animating the space, providing docent tours and engagement platforms for all age groups and diverse audiences, to assisting in the day to day work of managing gallery operations such as event coordination and membership mailings. Phase 2 - As a Curatorial Assistant will assist the Curatorial team with developing and realizing engagement concepts, leading and working within the Education Team as well as animating the Permanent Collection with multiple level research tracks. The exhibition in the summer and fall at the AGM is SAHMAT: Art and Activism in Indian Art on tour from the SMART Museum at University of Chicago. The exhibition will host numerous community chat forums and innovative community outreach developed specially by the AGM for our audiences. The incumbent will learn first-hand on organizing and conceptualizing ideas to reality in conjunction with the exhibition and providing community content for a diverse city. The position will embrace first or second languages that the incumbent may have, languages of Mississauga are encouraged to apply - and the AGM encourages them to interact with visitors to the AGM in a complementary manner which will encourage diverse groups and visitors to interact so as to inspire visitors so they may learn about the arts and engage with them. The AGM brings art to the community and the community to art in a strong multicultural and diverse environment. This is executed through programming and engagement in libraries, schools and community sites throughout Mississauga. Within both Phase 1 and Phase 2: The main objectives are for the incumbent to gain first-hand knowledge of day to day gallery operations; serving as point of first contact at reception and enhancing the visitor experience in the Gallery, thus gaining vital client relations and visitor engagement skills. They will gain practical skills related to exhibition, events, public program and outreach planning, which will allow them to learn about the many ways a public institution can connect with diverse audiences. They will learn the importance of membership and sponsorship and how to manage the Membership Database. This person will be actively engaged in social media and website management referring to the Social Media Policy and Marketing Campaigns, being actively involved in tweet chats, tweeting, Facebook and blogging assignments.
