[Interview] Shinhwa: Fans brings us together tightly Shinhwa, a long running boyband with an average age of 35 years old, has maintained 6-1=0 for 17 years. In an ever-changing Korean entertainment industry, they took on the pride of the first generation idol groups and continue to promote actively. This time, they’re in Shanghai as guests on “Big Laughters Of Life”, they showed their gag skills, like the original variety-idols they are, and also had a sweet date with the Orange Princesses. China fans are the most enthusiastic Q: It’s been a while since you’ve greeted the China fans, how does it feel? Shinhwa: It’s been more than a year, we came to China when we were having our Asia Tour, it’s been a long time since the 6 of us have gathered together and greeted everyone. We sincerely thank the many fans that have been welcoming us from the airport. Also, this time, our schedule isn’t to sing on stage but it’s because we were invited by the China version of “Gag Concert” to do a new comedy programme, we had fun recording it. Q: What differences are there between Chinese and Korean fans? Shinhwa: Japanese fans usually would pay attention all the way till the end of the song before applauding, Korean fans, to a certain extent, like to peek (referring to saseng fans). Chinese fans cheer very loudly, and have a more extreme reaction, so we’ll put in even more effort when performing on stage. Junjin is Shinhwa’s driving force Q: As Korea’s longest running group, what is the reason for staying together for 17 years? Shinhwa: It feels like the fans bring us together tightly, not letting us disband, and it is the friendship between the members that keeps us together. Our team’s driving force is Junjin, Junjin gives us a lot of strength. Once, when Junjin was missing for an episode of “Shinhwa Broadcast”, we all felt like we were going crazy, we’re dead without him. If you see Junjin wondering around alone on the streets, please remember to call our company. Q: When is Shinhwa’s comeback? Shinhwa: We Shinhwa will be greeting everyone with a new album after Seollal (Lunar New Year in Korea). A new performance, a new dance, and a new atmosphere, we’ll greet everyone with a new way. And also, this year is the Year of the Sheep. For some of the members, this is their year too. So we’d like to borrow their luck, it feels like we’ll succeed with their luck. Everyone will surely give us their support too, so we see this year as a very special year. Everyone, happy new year, our new album is coming out really soon, we hope you’ll like it. We are Shinhwa. Dongwan speaks Mandarin the best Q: Appearing in “Big Laughters Of Life”, is this your first time being invited by a Chinese TV programme? Shinhwa: It isn’t. We’ve been on programmes like specials? With singing and also interviews. We were invited by a singing competition (Chinese Idol) to sing, now that we think about it, we’ve done quite a lot of programmes before. Q: Which segments did you participate in? Shinhwa: We participated in “Let’s Break Up” and “Da Peng being a big-head”. Q: Do you speak in Korean or Mandarin on China’s programmes? Shinhwa: We’ve spoken in Korean, because there’s a translator, we’ve also said a bit of Mandarin, although we can’t speak it very well, but everyone will cheer for us, so we feel very happy. Dongwan speaks Mandarin the best, Hyesung speaks it well too. What we remember the most is “Da Peng is very handsome”, Da Peng was the host. Q: How did it feel recording “Big Laughters Of Life”? Shinhwa: It’s the same as the original Korea version, once the band plays the music, the actors, us and the audience will dance together, the atmosphere is good. We didn’t manage to speak our Mandarin lines very well but the audience gave us a lot of reactions, so we’re very happy. Just now Byungman hyung was there too, it felt a little like we were recording “Gag Concert” in Korea, it felt very comfortable.
