Interviewed by another blogger Serious kudos from breaking through and recreating the mold of traditional therapy, it’s truly inspirational. Do you remember the moment that guided you to challenge the status quo or was it a gradual process? Thanks. But I’m not sure if I’ve recreated anything just yet. I think I’m still playing with a new model and trying to creating a dialogue along the way. I never set out to change anything. I just decided to be as me as possible and through that process, I learned the power of the internet but more importantly the power of practicing transparency. Do you believe everyone could benefit from therapy and therefore everyone should have access to therapy? Yes, I believe everyone could benefit as long as they are open and thirsty for growth. I believe the stigma that therapy isn’t just for people with “issues” is slowly lifting. Therapy is now mainstream and for anyone who wants to be a better version of themselves. I think they should require group therapy in high school as a class, teach kids how to be aware of their thoughts and exercise expressing themselves in a healthy way. It would save them a lot of pain. What do your colleagues and peers think/say about your approach? What do you say to them? Besides working with my Team, I’m kind of in my own bubble. I don’t really have colleagues. I’m either running groups in Malibu, in front of my computer doing webcam sessions, or in a coffee shop doing an in person session or blogging. I feel like the up and coming therapists / life coaches like what I’m doing and the “old school” are against it. I think therapist who don’t use the internet as a tool don’t believe in what I’m trying to do. I believe they are afraid of change. I believe their resistance is ultimately due to fear. What has been more effective the traditional therapy that you learned in school or the more a motivational/coaching sessions that you’ve built in your Angry Therapist community? Or is a combination? I think the most powerful therapists pull from their life. I mean, you have to go to school to learn the theories and do all the hours to get comfortable, confident, and licensed. But once you’re up and running, what you bring into the room that no one else can, is you, your story, the way you think, your ways in, your humor, your ideas, your passion, your energy, and so on and so on. This is what makes you unique and if you embrace it, you will be effective. If not, you will leave very little impression. Do you feel like patients/clients/people are digging into taking more control of their health physical and mental? Yes, I think overall wellness, both physical and mental, is becoming a standard, a lifestyle. I think we used to seek change when conditions forced us to. Today, people are more inspired to change, what we eat, how we exercise, and creating better tools for relationships and ways of coping. Growth in general is in. It’s the new black. Will you share some of your stories of your most impactful clients? No. (deadpan). Actually, and I know this is going to sound generic, but each client impacts me in a different way. Some subtly, others not. But every collision stirs something in me, even if it’s just one conversation. I make a conscious effort to be open to that and allow that to happen. I think it’s a mistake if we try to fight it. I think it’s important as a therapist to accept the ripples that come the other way, and process that. I think that’s what will help us grow, not only as therapist but as people. I just read the question again and realized you may have meant the clients I have made the most impact on? If so, that I can’t answer. You would have to ask them. How do you pick your ‘team of catalysts’? Do they come to you or do you recruit them? This is a relatively new endeavor. Referrals. Word of mouth. A quick skype interview. An email. I think as I grow, my Team will grow, change, and evolve. One day, I will probably have some kind of system. But for now, many approach me. Many I recruit. But I’m always looking for powerful inspiring people to work with. I think it’s all about building a solid team. You wanted to make movies, does your lifestyle allow you to pursue this now? Do you have any films out at this time? My desire to make movies has been eclipsed by new dreams and passions. The film business feels like the huge crush I had on that girl at summer camp. But now school’s started, there’s lot of new girls and although I remember the summer camp girl, I’ve got feelings for a new hot chick! That being said, directing something is still on my bucket list and if I win the lotto one day, I’ll probably shoot something weird that no one will wanna see. When you were finding your purpose, did the universe conspire to assist you? When you finally believe you are worth something, the universe moves. I don’t know about others, but my journey to finding purpose and meaning happened organically once I changed my state, way of thinking, and false beliefs about myself. If you stop trying to control and chase, things will unfold naturally. The cards may not lay out as you planned, expected or wished but the way they laid out is where you’ll be at your greatest. As long as you accept this path. If you resist, you will be at your worst I’m highlighting you for a blog on my heroes in healthcare, do you have any heroes or people of inspiration who helped you along your journey? Bruce Lee. Steve Jobs. Dr. Drew. Tony Robbins. Christian Hosoi. Quentin Tarantino. Charles Bukowski. Pharrell Williams. Chris Spealler. Padhia Avocado. Every client I’ve ever worked with. And people like you, who follow me and that I think about every time I feel discouraged or clinically insane. - Angry
