Into the Tustumena country... On Saturday the traffic at the launch was unusually light for this time of year. Tustumena is a quiet, sleepy place until the fall season when many boaters decide to do a day tour or join in on the hunting season. The morning fog once again consumed the surroundings and I carefully plotted a route along the shore, but it was gone by midday. In the weather clear part of the Kasilof River I took a photo of one of the loons that often reside there. Tustumena Lake rises all summer long until water is filled to the very brim of the gravel shores and even sometimes spilling over into the lower lying lands around the lake. It peaks right around the last week of August and then steadily drops until the lake freezes. Its during this period of peak water the lake likes to pick up driftwood from years gone by and rearrange their location up and down the beach. Saturday was a day of cleaning up newly deposited driftwood in front of the cabin. Like a thousand times before a campfire on the shore and I felt right at home. As I was cleaning up the beach I spooked up a brown bear and a cub not all that far away. When she ran through the woods she would make this blowing sound like we-you, we-you, we-you. I caught a glimpse of her up on the point and took a photo. Last night the sun set with a yellow sky over Tustumena and Redoubt mountain commanded the scene before me in the distance. This morning I headed over to the glacier and took a photo of the fall colors. Only the glacier area has the color change so far many of the trees on the hillsides are still green.
