Introducing ICAN Co-Leader and Treasurer, Renee Wegner! HI! My name is Renee Wegner and I am very excited to be a part of ICAN of the Inland Empire as one of the new co-leaders. I live in the “other” high desert (the Morongo Basin, gateway to Joshua Tree National Park), and have joined with Kathie and Christina to bring ICAN to women in our communities. I look forward to working with these two amazing ladies to bring support and share ICAN’s invaluable resources with all of you. With the focus on ICAN’s mission: improving maternal and child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). The intervention-filled births of my daughters sparked my current work as a doula and participation in ICAN. My oldest babe, Abigail, was born in 2009. Her traumatic birth ended with an unnecessary cesarean. The painful experience brought on postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, which I suffered through on my own, not knowing where to turn. Yet I just knew this could not be the normal birthing process. Luckily I found ICAN and the research and healing began. In 2010 we found out we would be expecting another blessing, and my heart was set for a VBAC. Research and child birth classes consumed me (in a good way). Plans changed at 35 weeks with PPROM (preterm premature rupture of membranes). I waited and prayed I would go into active labor, but it was not to be. Isabella with born via CBAC. Even though the births did not go as planned, I am grateful for our children, our journey and our stories. They are very much a part of who I am today. With two beautiful girls, life is good! I am also grateful for the opportunity to connect with our communities, support families, share ICAN’s message. Here’s to new friendships.
