Introduction to Legalism The world has greatly destabilized over the past few years. Between governments spying on its own people, unending wars, and the constant state of fear, it seems as if the world is being ripped apart. Some believe it’s the end of the world, others do not know what to think. They are lost in and confused in a world that is increasingly making less and less sense. Meanwhile, the current order is simply marching on, unhindered, unmoved by it all. It is business as usual for them. Meanwhile, millions are suffering, barely living on scraps, while others have bought their 15th BMW. To put it simply, there is a disconnect between the ruling classes and the people. One thing is a certainty – A major course correction must be made. Elected officials believe that, essentially, all that is needed is a facelift. Simply changing the tax code or giving more benefits to the poor. People like President Obama promised change, but all that has been done is a facelift in this manner. Legalists propose emergency surgery. Many people before us have stated surgery is required, but they do not know what kind of surgery – They do not know how to go about it. Legalists have a clear plan, a clear vision on how the world can be corrected. Before one can understand the surgery we legalists suggest, we must first clearly know the symptoms and the disease that needs removal. To many, the disease is the current order, the leadership in the world. Leaders have become arrogant and complacent and do not even attempt to really fix the issues. They simply hide them and hope they will go away. However, leaders are not to blame, for they are merely a symptom of the disease. The disease that plagues the current system is not one of humans, it is a structural deficiency. That deficiency is the law. The law today is immensely complex, varies from town to town and overall skewed in favor of one class over another. Such a law cannot even attempt to be equal, to be just, for it is created to be deficient, to prop up one class. This deficient law is known widely as the American legal system. We legalists call such a law crooked law – false law. Why is it called false? For it cannot be made equal or just, no matter what is done. It has to be completely overhauled. A law system can be the basis of a stable, functioning government, but such false law only does the opposite, creating the situation we have today. Therefore, legalists have a basic and simple solution, fix the law. However, this is much easier in name than in practice, for the entire system must undergo a redesign to ensure the problems of today never plague humanity again. So what does it mean to redesign it? The American law system is complex, inconsistent, and based on indefiniteness. Laws are complex, so no one knows really what is legal and what is illegal. This allows for abuse of the system. The laws are inconsistent, meaning that criminals are unequally punished. This leads them to believe that they can get away with crime. With indefiniteness, officials are able to serve their private interests without hindrance. These are the three primary problems with the American law system today. Legalists propose a law comprised of three things: Clarity, simplicity, and swiftness. Clarity means that punishments are standardized. If you do a thing, a specific consequence will result. Simplicity ensures that everyone, even the most untalented person, can understand the law. This means the use of common everyday words to create law, not legalese. Swiftness ensures the law is followed because people will relate action x with result y. X and Y become one and the same. Clarity eliminates inconsistency, simplicity eliminates complexity, and swiftness eliminates the lack of definiteness. Thus, the legalist theory on the law is established. But how does a legalist accomplish this specifically? The legalist law is not one of morality or of mercy. Why? Morals are not definite and vary from person to person. Thus, clarity and simplicity cannot be established using morality. As such, a legalist does not define morality. A person can do what he or she pleases, so long it does not negatively affect others. Unlike the law today, legalists have no need to reach the governments tentacles into every facet of an individual’s life. What does it mean that legalist law lacks mercy? The law is the law. If it is not enforced equally in all cases, it lacks definiteness. This will result in the world you see today being repeated and allow officials to be once more corrupt. Therefore, in case of murder, the specific circumstances in murdering someone are irrelevant. All that matter is that someone murdered them. Whether this is done by accident, or in revenge, the punishment is the same. Thus, clarity, simplicity, and definiteness are all established. How do we know legalist law can work? Unlike the current system, in which success is measured in number of people in jail or number of policeman, success to a legalist is measured in the number of idle policepersons and the number of empty prison cells. That is when a legalist knows the law is working, when people become virtuous. Thus, despite legalist law being merciless and without morals, it creates virtue as a result. Righteousness and kindness to fellow humans will go unreported, not because it does not exist, but because it becomes the norm. The righteousness cannot make others righteous, nor can a loving person make another love. Only the law can do this if it is clear, simple, and swift. How does a legalist create law? There are three reasons for criminal activity according to a legalist: Criminals are not being caught, the law is not harsh enough, and the underlying causes are not being addressed. If the law is harsh, but criminal activity still occurs, it means that criminals are not being caught. If the law is harsh and criminals are being caught, then the law is not harsh enough. If the law is harsh and the criminals are being caught, but the criminals do not care about being caught, it means the causes are not being addressed. This is the method of legalist law. However, the law is merely one component of fixing the world today. It is the core of legalism and this is the reason we are known as legalists. However, the law is the not end to correcting the imbalance that exists, it is merely the beginning.
