Intuitive Selection of Essential Oils By Jennifer Jefferies ND Teacher International Aromatherapy and Aromatic Medicine Association Member Australian Traditional Medicine Society Working one day you notice that you have a headache, and that lately your have had a run of headaches. You also remember that your partner has been away and work has been particularly busy. The physical symptoms of the headache are a message to you from your body. Your body will give you messages as to what is needs at any one time, provided you listen to it you will receive good health in return. The problem is that now day’s people are so busy doing what has to be done that, they forget to listen to their bodies and go against nature the majority of the time, the result, they suffer a full range of physical ailments. “Illness is a human condition which indicates that the patient is no longer in order or in harmony at the level of consciousness. The loss of inner balance manifests itself in the body as a symptom. The symptom is at one and the same time a signal and a vehicle for information, for its appearance interrupts our life’s familiar flow and forces us to give the symptom our attention” (1) My interest in how you can work with your body and its messages started when I learnt Kinesiology, and I started working with clients on the emotions behind their manifestation of physical ailments. Kinesiology linked to my training in aromatherapy when I studied Aromatic Kinesiology with Robbie Zeck. This excited me to the potential of working with the emotional talents of the essential oils. Allowing your body and intuition to guide you to what essential oils will be best for you at any one given time is a powerful experience. Initially you have to get past your ego and knowing logically what is good for you. When you do this you can start to trust your intuition (gut feeling) and listen to what is really needed. To help people access and work with their intuition I developed a set of Insight Cards as a tool to access this information. In a clinic environment, it is not always possible to get a client to reveal everything that is happening in their life. Generally they do not intentionally try to hide information from you, it may be that your questioning does not give the right leads for information, so it is beneficial to have a tool for this purpose. It can also be that they are not completely aware of what is really happening. In my clinic I would complete a general consultation and then if I needed more insight to where the person really was emotionally and how that was manifesting in their physical being I would use the insight cards. It would be usual for me to have the client intuitively select three to five cards in the following manner. I would have them just think of today and where they are at with the day, then shuffle the cards and focus their attention on the treatment they were about to have. Depending on how they were, I would either have them look at the paintings on the cards or not. If the person were able to go through the cards quickly, I would use this method as it allows them to work with their intuition rather than go slowly thinking about your decision and using their logic. If they cannot switch off their logic and ego that is fine, I would then have them focus on the reverse of the cards for their selection. After they had made their selection I would blend massage oil using the combination they had chosen. With every client to date, they have been able to relate to their emotional state as interpreted by the cards. “The body itself has no power to generate illness; illness is merely the shadow thrown by the mind. A healthy mind will shadow forth a healthy body; an unhealthy mind will shadow forth an unhealthy body. Every new cell created in the body is either negative or a positive thought in form. In the older days, it was customary to say that cells are “built under the influence” of either negative or positive thought. In reality, the cells are the thought itself. Healthy thoughts mean healthy cells; sick thoughts mean sick cells. (2) The difference in working in this style in a clinic situation is that you are able to access emotional imbalances behind the physical symptoms they are presenting with. The person has more chance of breaking the negative pattern that they are repeating and they can then move forward away from their physical symptoms. The majority of clients I saw in my clinic were women heading towards adrenal burnout, and they were not always consciously aware of their emotional state. They were just surviving, moving from one situation to the next, and their bodies were manifesting symptoms to slow them down. But as with most people today, they do not have the time to slow down and enjoy quality rest and recharging. Once they tap into the information it is like a light being switched on, when the headache first begins for instance they can contemplate what emotionally has been happening that could be driving the symptoms. Why does their body want and need a break? The information received from the interpretation of the cards is a guide based on where you are today emotionally and what emotions may be influencing you. You can then choose to work with the essential oils like I did in clinic with massage, or simply use an oil vaporizer with those oils to rebalance life. In this ever-pacing world, maybe it is it time to go back to some basics and listen to our bodies, work with nature, not get caught up in the negative influences of life and enjoy the health benefits.
