Iranian-British woman gets year in prison for trying to watch mens volleyball game A British-Iranian student from Londons famous School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) has been sentenced to a year in prison for trying to watch a mens volleyball match. Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25 was found guilty of spreading anti-regime propaganda, her lawyer Alizadeh Tabatabaie said. Iran banned women from volleyball games in 2012. Britain has been trying to diplomatically resolve the shocking case at the highest level with prime minister David Cameron personally urging Iranian president Hassan Rouhani to intervene and release Ghavami. Cameron told Rouhani to consider the impact that such cases had on Irans image in the UK. Miss Ghavami was in Iran visiting family and volunteering. She was arrested immediately after the volleyball match in Tehran on June 20 and released, only to be detained again when she went to collect her belongings at a police station. A release petition has already been signed by over 80,000 people calling for Iran to let Ghavami go. However in a major blow, her lawyer Mahmoud Alizadeh Tabatabaei said on Sunday that Ghavami has been found guilty of propagating against the ruling system. Tabatabaei said he was shown the text of the verdict but is still waiting to officially receive it. Ghavami has been in jail since June. Britains Foreign Office said it was concerned about the sentence. We have concerns about the grounds for this prosecution, due process during the trial, and Miss Ghavamis treatment whilst in custody, it said in a statement. Ghavami last month went on a hunger strike.
