Iris DeMent was born on January 5, 1961 in Paragould, Arkansas. She is an American singer songwriter with overtones of folk and country in her music. DeMent began writing songs at the age of 25. Her first album, Infamous Angel, was released in 1992 it explores such themes as religious skepticism, small-town life, and human frailty. Our Town is Dements best known song, it was used in the last episode of Northern Exposure and is a sweet ode to small town life.
