Irretrievable student loans will exceed more than $11 billion by 2018, the Grattan Institute predicts. A former student has to earn a threshold salary before beginning repayments. At the moment this is $53,345. In the meantime Industry Minister Ian McFarlane is trying to close a loophole in the governments education funding. Mr Macfarlane said he was furious that some colleges were targeting retirement villages and Centrelink offices, offering free iPads to induce students to sign up for unsuitable courses. Under the current system, colleges can pocket government subsidies regardless of whether a student finishes the course or finds a job. This should be a warning to the government that the proposed deregulation of university fess should not involve the government lending any fees the universities choose to levy. Under the proposal the universities will be able free of any responsibility for the debts incurred through the higher fees. The taxpayer will be left with the problem. theaustralian.au/national-affairs/education/irretrievable-student-loans-to-exceed-11bn/story-fn59nlz9-1227168740129 theaustralian.au/higher-education/criminal-colleges-recruit-retirement-home-students-to-cash-in-on-subsidies/story-e6frgcjx-1227168813266
