Iryna Klisz, owner of Northwestern Travel in Chicago, made a generous contribution to the museum’s extensive collection of authentic regional embroidery with her donation of nine embroidered cloth towels, rushnyky, from the Cherkasy, Poltava, and Kyiv regions. All of them bear the traditional red and black patterns and symbols characteristic of the embroidery in these regions. The black thread symbolizes wealth. The fertile black soil in those three regions of Ukraine was seen as a source of protection for the living, who reaped the fruits of its harvest, and the dead, who lay safely buried in it. The red thread symbolizes the sun through the flowering blooms and wedding wreaths. The birds convey their chirping sounds and symbolize the songs of the human spirit. The ancestral family cloths bear a flowering tree of life that represents maternal strength and empowerment. Almost all of the cloths have various rose blooms which symbolize the sun and the stability found in its predictable movements through the seasons. UNM thanks Ms. Klisz for her generous contribution as well as all the benefactors for their monetary and in-kind gifts. (Roxy Kozyckyj)
