Is Any Among You Suffering? This question was asked by James (the pillar of the church in Jerusalem, Galatians 2:9) to those former Christians there who had been scattered everywhere in the world due to persecution for their Christian faith. Christians suffer in the same ways as non-Christians suffer—physically, psychologically, financially, etc.—but they, in addition, face persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). James begins and ends his letter to such afflicted Christians on how to cope. The bottom line is to rely on the power of prayer. Peter said to cast every care upon God because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). Paul said that God will answer our prayers and give us more than we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). He has provided elders in the church for solace and prayer (James 5:13-14), as well as brothers and sisters in Christ (James 5:16). The beauty and blessing of it all is that any one of us, as Christians, can avail ourselves of the personal power of prayer (James 5:13-18). Is any among you suffering? Let him (or her) pray.
