Is Scripture the Word of God ? There is currently a negative undercurrent flowing throughout the body of Christ concerning the place and the value of Scripture. It seems that some wish to discredit the Scriptures as a valid and trustworthy body of God’s Words from which believers can live. It seems that they wish to unmoor themselves and live their lives based upon what they think God is speaking to them personally — which some actually say is more valid and reliable than Scripture itself. One argument some use is to say that the phrase “the Word of God” refers only to Jesus. They say that Jesus is indeed the Word of God, but that Scripture is not the Word of God. But Jesus Himself — Who is the Word of God — completely discredits their argument since He referred to Scripture as “the Word of God” Himself. In John 10:35, for example, Jesus used the terms “the Word of God” and “Scripture interchangeably when He said, “If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken). Also, this passage from Mark 7:6-13 shows clearly that Jesus referred to Scripture as the Word of God. It reads: “And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men. Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men. He was also saying to them, You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to be put to death; But you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God), You no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; Thus invalidating The Word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.” Notice that Jesus quoted Isaiah — the Scriptures. Notice that He mentioned the commandment of God. Notice that He quoted Moses — the Scriptures. Notice, then, that He summed things up by referring to the Scriptures and the commandments of God as the Word of God. I’m not sure who is behind the movement to discredit Scripture — even saying that Scripture is less valid than what God speaks personally to one’s heart — but I’m convinced in my own heart that it isn’t the Father, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. It seems that some simply wish to be unrestrained in their beliefs and not have to submit to God or to anyone else, but are free to say, “Well, God told me something different and that’s between me and God.” One person actually told me, “I have had to learn that when God tells me something, it doesn’t always agree with the Scriptures.” Of course, when I said, “Well, God told me that you are wrong and said we should all hold fast to Scripture,” they concluded that I wasn’t open to the Holy Spirit. In other words, they are right no matter what anyone else says, even God speaking through Scripture. The days coming are perilous days. One misstep some are already making is devaluing the Scriptures that God has given to teach, guide, correct, and enlighten us. Rather than join Paul’s high value of Scripture as revealed in his exhortation to Timothy or paying attention to Peter’s clear exhortation to “pay attention to the Scriptures” - the more sure word of prophecy - they are loosing themselves from God’s Word and going their own way. Remaining submitted to Scripture will be very important for believers in these last days. Without the Word of God which is a lamp unto our feet, some will begin to travel into dark places and loose their way.
