Is Your Service a Blessing or a Curse? Romans 12:3c ...but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. Thoughts for Today: Paul is saying we need to have a correct estimation of ourselves and our abilities in relationship to the other members of our church. He warns us there is a danger of over-estimating our gifts, calling, or even character. We therefore need to use sober judgment. This also means to realize and recognize our inabilities and limitations in the areas we would like to serve God. For example, if I had my choice of ministry areas I might like to serve on the worship team. I love music, and worshipping the Lord instrumentally and vocally is so uplifting to my spirit. I would also like to share my gift with everyone. But is it a gift or just something I enjoy doing? Pastor Rob, the leader of our Churchs worship band, would say it is definitely not my area of giftedness. Fortunately, he has never had to have that conversation with me. Why? Because using sober judgment, I have decided there are many more people in our congregation who are far more musically gifted than me. Does that mean I refuse to serve at all because I dont get to do what I would like? Of course not, I simply serve in the areas in which God has gifted and chosen for me. In my case thats on the finance committee, deacon board, teaching a Bible study, and in mens ministry. As a result, I have been blessed -- and more importantly Ð I have been a blessing to others, and not a curse. Questions to Ponder: Not everything we might like to do is an area of giftedness. But so too, just because we like something doesnt mean we arent good at it. Quite the opposite -- and it is why Paul has given us such specific instruction. He asks us to use sober judgment Ð to accurately appraise our own gifts, calling and competencies. Do so now. What would you like to do? Truthfully, are you good at it? What are your best talents? In what areas do you excel? Where should you serve?
