Is disheartened by recent posts and conversations seen online and in this alternative reality we live in (the real world). The Dalia Lama once said “People take different roads seeking fulfilment and happiness. Just because they’re not on your road doesn’t mean they’ve gotten lost”. We are all faced with injustices, unfair circumstances and situations that oppose our own values and journey to happiness. I believe it is our choice on how we act in these moments. The Late Grand Master and founder of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan, Hwang Kee discussed the “Action Philosophy”: Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan is an “Action Philosophy” based on the Moo Do (Martial Way / Discipline). We use Soo Bahk Do to realize our full potential both physically and mentally to emphasize “Virtue in action” demonstrating courage, discipline, confidence and humility through our sincere efforts in training and our behavior towards others. I believe that empathy and action combined can be a very powerful tool. When someone does wrong by me (cuts me off in traffic, gives me verbal abuse or claps on 1 & 3), they are providing me with a fantastic opportunity to act accordingly with humility and my values. If I respond in kind (curse at them, abuse them back or point and laugh), I lose my integrity and am acting within their values. To me, this concept becomes more powerful with meaningful differences such as gender, race, spiritual beliefs, cultural differences, lifestyle choices and so much more. Can we (as a society) act on our values without acting out on others? Can we express our beliefs without identifying faults in others? Can we all find fulfilment and happiness? Yes, I do realise the subtle contradicting sub text that I am too in some way identifying faults in others, but that is the challenge that faces us all.
