Is epilepsy hereditary? Most children will not inherit epilepsy - TopicsExpress

Is epilepsy hereditary? Most children will not inherit epilepsy from a parent. Less than two people out of every 100 develop epilepsy at some point during their lifetime. The risk if a father has epilepsy is slightly higher. If a mother has epilepsy, it is still less than 5%. If both parents have epilepsy, the risk is a bit higher but not great. However there is a greater risk from certain types of epilepsy. An example is primary generalised epilepsy, when seizures begin from both sides of the brain at once. If you have epilepsy, it is normal for you to worry that your children will have it. There has been a lot of research into epilepsy and genetics in recent years. You may be able to get genetic testing, counseling or advice if your doctor thinks it necessary.
