Is it harmful for the eyes to wear cheap, ordinary sunglasses? Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, in the sunlight, has many harmful effects on the eye which includes Cataract formation, Pterygium and Age Related Macular Degeneration. Therefore it is important to protect the eyes from UV radiation by wearing sunglasses. The cheap unbranded sunglasses may not have UV protection so though they won’t harm the eyes, they will not protect from UV radiation. Most branded sunglasses will have UV protection so it’s best to ask the sales person before buying. Beware of hawkers & roadside stalls!
