Is it just me or is a major part of being a parent all about double standards and hypocrisy? Its like being a boss, a Regional Leader for Nature Conservation. Do what I say and not what I do! As a parent and Dad, I find Im always saying eat your veggies have some water play outside and be nice. Then first chance I get I justify a beer, maccas, slouch on the couch and a sledge of the Fremantle football club all because I walked to the shops, to buy chocolate! You want to be a good person? Lead by example! I was always told. I try, honestly I do, I put out his his lunch of salad and tuna, encourage him to eat. He looks at me and I can see it in his eyes, Why do I eat this and you get the left over pasta carbonara and a tipple of wine when Im not even allowed apple juice? He picks up his piece of capsicum and raises I above his head before hurling it across the room, while I plead with him to just try it, he gets the edge of the plate and flips it over before laughing and pointing at the stove where he knows using his sixth sense for food that theres pasta is waiting to be heated up. Oh No I say, before adding happily theres nothing there, lets have a Vegemite sanga! But he wants down so I sit him on the floor give him his sandwich and begin cleaning up his salad and tuna. Hes happily crawling around and eating. Turning back I see hes eaten his sandwich so, as a reward he can share my pasta lunch. Sitting him on my knee I realise share is a loose term as he ate the whole lot leaving me with left over salad and tuna. The next morning as I quietly creep across the kitchen to go for a solo run I sit and pull on my runners, creep out side and sit down to adjust the slightly uncomfortable tongue, to realise there is a hardly eaten Vegemite sandwich stuffed under the laces! Every step on that Vegemite stench run I swore Id be a better parent and lead by example, before coming home and dishing up his cereal with one hand while cooking eggs with the other and silently chastising myself.
