Is it me or does it seem the core of human behavior is to avoid - TopicsExpress

Is it me or does it seem the core of human behavior is to avoid adding any more of a burden onto yourself? Its self preservation, right? When youre stranded at sea at the person next to you is drowning, do you accept that burden? Do you die trying to save a life or live with that looming question of whether you left someone to die? Its not easy taking on a problem thats not yours. But arent we supposed to behave this way? Is enlightenment just learning to accept the bad in the world? If youre religious your religion likely speaks of compassion. If youre not religious you surely still have a moral compass. So why do we avoid burdens that are not ours? You could die tomorrow... The only remnant of your existence will be defined by those burdens you took upon yourself or chose to ignore. Is it enlightened to say, who cares?. Is it moral? Its too easy for some of us to repress the memory of ignoring someone in need. This really isnt directed at those that frequently ignore right and wrong. Its asking those of us that like to think we do the right thing. If you consider yourself a moral person then you should live up to the challenge, right?
