Is it that time again? Do I feel the need to vent my IRL frustrations onto the CEs so called Science? I think I shall! Now, Ive talked before about why I think its stupid that they still rely on Fission, and I dont think it needs mentioning that this was not only one of the most BS fights in Gundam history, but a moment of sheer plot armor bullshit that makes Nuking the Fridge look plausible. However, this time I felt the need to address another issue with this moment, one that I think gets overlooked way too often in favor of the other stupidity. Now, in case you dont get what happens here, Shin breached the reactor on Kiras Freedom, which set off a chain reaction that created a surprisingly benign nuclear explosion. Setting aside the fact that the entire cast of GSD would have been vaporized or subjected to a slow, agonizing death of radiation poisoning.... Fission reactors dont work that way. The reaction gained from harvesting it for energy generation is not the same phenomenon used in a Nuclear Bomb such as the one used on Hiroshima (Though its worth mentioning that the modern nukes use Fusion nowadays.) See, while Fission reactors arent the most reliable, they were still built to minimize the potential risks, which means that theyve gone out of their way to prevent huge explosions like that, so much so that the possibility isnt really there. Not even Chernobyl, the most infamous and catastrophic example out there did that (Thats the photo of the damage caused by the explosion. Take a look at how relatively small it is). Of course, if they were using FUSION, the result of the reactor breach would just be an expensive repair bill and a minor leak in radiation akin to getting an X-Ray... but apparently Fission is more effective in the CE, despite every law in the book of physics arguing otherwise.
