Is liking or hating Indian language television tear-jerking serials a gender thing? Women seem to like watching them and men seem to hate women watching them. It is all too complicated, methinks. Media Academic/Activist types have been saying they are regressive, etc. I have my pet peeves - somethings that I dont like about TV serials. It includes: Some character or other eavesdropping, overhearing, hiding and hearing conversations... One-crisis-an-episode template... and so much of sinister plotting, skullduggery, machiavellian revenge schemes in seemingly normal middle/upper-middle class households... is mind-boggling to me. Silly misunderstandings appear irresolvable and having disproportionately devastating effect... Men and women permanently made-up, decked-up that it skews peoples perception of normal, everyday looks... Occasionally, when I watch serials back-to-back, I get confused - they are all so alike - across channels, languages, cultures, etc. Lastly, I am quite uncomfortable with the dubbing of hindi serials into other Indian languages...
