Is the key to winning elections to snub your supporters?... Pundits say the GOP has to become more Libertarian to attract young voters. That means distancing themselves from social conservatives who make up a big part of the base. Well, the Nevada Republican Party just made the first official move in that direction, by voting to drop both its pro-life platform plank and its support for the traditional definition of marriage. State chairman Michael McDonald told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that “this is where the party is going,” and that the GOP platform is “about inclusion, not exclusion.” Well, unless you’re a social conservative. Sounds as if they’re trying to make the tent bigger by throwing out the people who are already inside. Republicans should think more carefully about how to attract new voters without alienating their current ones. Remember the Aesop’s Fable about the dog who dropped his bone to try to grab a bone away from another dog? It was just his reflection in a stream. He ended up with nothing. And a party can’t win when it’s boneless. Or spineless.
