" … Is there a God? Any number of arguments can be produced for or against the existence of God. Theists and atheists have been waging this war of never ending arguments. If God does not exist, then there is no need to discuss it further. But if God exists, then there is another big confusion about the form and attributes of God. Different scriptures describe God in different ways and readers of many of those scriptures interpret them each in different ways. Within the followers of a particular religion, there are many sects. Each sect has its own set of beliefs and arguments. All this adds up to a huge confusion. Yoga is a science of “union’. For union to happen there must be an object to be unified with. If God is a confusing concept, with whom or what does the spiritual aspirant aspire to unite with? What are the shape, qualities and attributes of the creator? Let us briefly turn to science. Science has long been trying to discover the building blocks of matter. First it was believed that all matter is made of a particle called an atom; then sub-atomic particles -- protons, neutrons, and electrons. Scientists then discovered that protons and neutrons consisted of smaller particles called quarks. Now scientists talk about three types of building blocks, quarks, leptons and bosons. In the Standard Model of Physics, they also talk of hypothetical Higgs boson, named after Peter Higgs, an emeritus professor of physics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In March 2013, some scientists confirmed having discovered the Higgs boson, also popularly referred to as the “God particle” because it is believed to have caused the ‘Big Bang” which caused the creation of universe. This claim was also made by scientists of European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). However, an element of uncertainty still remains whether the Higgs boson has really been discovered and is there only one Higgs boson or if there are many such Higgs bosons type particles. Then there is also another big question: is there or are there some other larger forces at work behind the Higgs boson as well? This quest will go on. But it is very doubtful if scientists would be ever able to catch God. After all he is too smart to be caught in a physicist’s laboratory! What the scientists are trying to discover is the ultimate building block of matter. Spiritual aspirants, and especially those following the science of yoga, seek to go beyond the ultimate building blocks; their concern is the ultimate truth. If you are on the path of the ultimate truth, the ultimate building blocks of matter are easily understood. But then you must cross the world of science and enter the realm of spirituality. The language in which these spiritual people speak, in an effort to indicate to the ultimate truth, is not understood by most scientists. The problem is further confounded by the different expressions and languages that the enlightened masters belonging to different religious-spiritual traditions have used to indicate the ultimate truth. At times they even seem contradictory and are enormously confusing for people who try to intellectually grasp the meaning of the words of such masters. Since ancient times sages, seers, saints, prophets, and all enlightened masters have known the answer to the question of the most fundamental building blocks of matter; and not with any sophisticated scientific instruments but by simple meditation … " from CHAPTER II Yoga, God, and Cosmic Consciousness
