Is there a chronic pain personality type? In practice I have come - TopicsExpress

Is there a chronic pain personality type? In practice I have come to learn that many people who suffer from chronic pain also demonstrate the characteristics of hopelessness, pessimism, anxiousness, disbelief in the medical model, and worst of all the refusal to accept at least some responsibility in the healing process. I wonder if these personality traits helped create the chronic pain state, or did the pain create these traits? My suspicion leads me to believe that its probably a bit of both. Failure with the medical model leads to frustration and hopelessness. While giving these clients an anatomical rational for their pain (misaligned, degenerative disease etc) might make the therapist look good to the patient, it only feeds into their perceived lack of control over their pain. But still, I wonder how many chronic pain patients are predisposed based on a common set of behavioral/coping traits? Im sure there is a study on it...
