Is there a right way to teach spelling? Visual flash cards, Letter Land, Jolly Phonics or should you teach spelling rules? Some children seem to be good spellers when they get started but after a while they dont seem to keep up. Why might this be? -Relying on only one method for learning spelling may not allow individuals to learn how THEY learn best (e.g., visual learners versus auditory learners). Some spelling methods work for a while but then the same child might need different ways to learn to spell at different points in their learning journey. For example, in younger grades memorizing words as strings of letters or memorizing word shapes may be enough. However children can soon become overwhelmed. There are too many words to just learn by sight. Rules can then give a foundation for learning whole groups of words and a good starting point at try to sound out a new or unfamiliar word if a child recognises a rule. One useful rule is The magic E rule or sometimes it is called the silent e rule. But you cant begin to try to teach rules if children really, really cant tell you about vowels (AEIOU) . The first step is to teach children that vowels have a name (e.g., AY as in long vowel sound like in pAy) AND vowels can also make a sound (e.g, a as in apple). The attached video gives an example of how there are rules when e is in a word - an e at the end of word makes the vowel say its name instead of its sound.
