Is this a tit for tat? In August last year, the Singapore government has increased its vehicle entry permit (VEP) fees on foreign cars. This was done to match the charges imposed by the Malaysian government on Singapore-registered cars, as well as to reduce the traffic congestion problem on the island. However, the Malaysian government has cited the increase in the charges was because of the cost incurred in building and maintaining the highway, which provides access for cars into Singapore. Recently, it has also consented to impose VEP fares on Singapore-registered cars. This latest development has raised the concern of the Singapores Ministry of Transport. It has in fact contacted its counterparts in Malaysia to justify their action. In doing so, the possible repercussion may just be that the Malaysian government could likely use the same reasoning in imposing the new VEP fees on Singapore-registered cars. As such, this will lead to no end for both Malaysian and Singaporean motorists. In a less favourable hearsay, the Kedah government is said to be attempting to follow Johor’s footsteps in imposing a VEP fee for Thai-registered vehicles too.
