Is this what we call “INDEPENDENCE”? Here’s how August 15, 2014, the Independence Day has been planned and celebrated in one of the reputed schools in Vijayawada: First, announce an inter-school 1-minute elocution competition. Send notices to all the schools to this effect. Declare a topic one day before the event so that children could prepare for it. And when everyone has made his own preparations, change the topic. Ask the students to pick their own topics from a box full of folded paper slips (with a topic written on each one of them) and ask them to speak on the topics right away. Well, what about the children competing from their own school? Mark the paper slips with a particular color (so that their own students could recognize them) with the papers containing topics which have been individually assigned to them the day before. Now, conduct the elocution in a grand fashion in the presence of all the bigwigs. Who’s gonna win? Everyone knows it. Now, honor the winner and get the news printed in a newspaper. Wow!! Isn’t this a “wonderful” publicity trick? How cheap and gross that is? All in the name of Independence day!! Have all the martyrs who brought forth independence died in vain? If children are taught and encouraged to cheat at this young age, I can only wonder as to what awaits them when they turn big? It has just reminded me of a similar incident in NTR University where a professor of a certain college had asked his students to use a pen of a particular color for underlining their answers so that the examiners could recognize the answer sheets and give more marks. What kind of a wickedness is this? And, eventually, as it turned out to be, one of his students went on to achieve the gold medal in that subject. Wow!! What an honor, wasn’t it? What an incredible plot!! On any given day, I’m quite sure both the above plots could humble any of the greatest storywriters the Hollywood has ever witnessed. All in the name of education and patriotism. Where is this world coming to? Shameless people with selfish designs to suit their personal gains. Teachers, professors and doctors by profession. Shameless by conduct. What an “independent” India we have? It’s time we hang our heads in shame.
