Isaiah 40.31 “But those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength… they will mount up with wings as eagles, they will run and not be weary, they will walk and they will not faint…” We all know something about renewal. Vacations are a great time for renewal if we don’t plan so much in them that we need a vacation to get over our vacation. Seasonal study and prayer sabbaticals can do wonders for perspective. Weekly excursions to the course, the beach, the park, the pool, the mountains, the woods, the tub, a book nook, a mate-date-away – whatever, wherever it is that we just get the opportunity to “renew.” Of course, the only problem with those times of renewal is that they are never long enough. And try as we might – we begin feeling too much of the press of life around us… there’s just so much going on and there are so many needs and needy people, and we do begin to feel weary, faint, and we find that it’s been too long since we last “soared with the eagles!” We don’t often think of this devotional verse as a “momentary” fixer of life! We think of it more as a process of time (we let the eagle metaphor get in the way of the truth)… but there’s nothing that says it can’t be appropriated when you’ve just finished a harrowing day at work and the phone rings and you just don’t feel faith surging to meet the needs of the person on the other end. You can pray a weak little prayer and hope that God picks up on the message – or you can come to Him, in an instant, “What do you want to do here?” Wait on Him for the shot of faith, and pray like a gusher! These days, you may need to appropriate this little verse fifty times a day – and fifty times a day receive strength to fly above the turmoil to see what’s really going on, to gather your physical and emotional senses, to engage the spirit realm and just walk out the issues without fainting or faltering one moment! It says, “Those that wait on the Lord…” not for the Lord. “Waiting on Him – to speak up before you do, to stir you up before you reach, so that you can saddle up to meet this need and this one and this one without wearing yourself out… Wait on Him, don’t go it alone, don’t be tempted to take matters into your own hands, have the presence of mind to stop… and be fresh for every need!
