Islam is DEEN, and not a RELIGION As a term ‘deen’ is used in the Qur’an to describe Islam. Deen is loosely translated into English as religion, which is not correct. Islam is not a religion in the ordinary sense of the word. The Qur’an has not used the word religion for Islam. - Dr Hasanuddin Ahmed, The Arabic for religion is Diyanah (pl. Diyanat). It denotes creeds and rituals, symbols and taboos, priesthood and church. Deen is derived from Daan meaning, to obey. Quran 9:29 Obey (yadinuna) the rule (deen) of justice (haqq). Deen (pl. Adiyan) = obedience, faith, rule, law, judgment, way of life, reckoning, requital, government, social system, world system . He (Yusuf) could not have detained his brother according to the Deen of the King (Pharaoh), but Allah willed it so. Surah Yusuf 12:26. Here Deen means ‘law of the land’. Religion is a psychic prison. Religion is a social evil. Religion is a commodity which the priesthood sells to make money for self-aggrandizement. Religion divides mankind. Islam is not religion. Islam is social system of Allah (Quran 3:19, 85) leading to love, righteousness, social justice, unity of mankind, equality in this world and salvation and Paradise in the life Hereafter. In Islam service of mankind is service of Allah. If no social justice, no Islam. Islam is a complete and final teaching which has superseded all previous teachings. Belief in them, therefore, is only in sense of reverence for them and not in the sense that a Muslim should act upon them. There is no priesthood in Islam. There is no division of priesthood and laymen in Islam. Islam is the Quran-way and not the so-called Ulama-way. If you follow the Quran in letter and spirit, you are a Muslim.
