Islamic Dress Code for Men and Women Allah (God) says in the Holy Quran that women must guard their modesty. " Say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty ; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof. " [Quran: 24.31] " Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty ; that will make for greater purity for them, and God is well acquainted with all they do. " [Quran : 24.30] " And O ye believers turn ye all together toward God, so that ye may attain bliss. " [Quran : 24.31] The dress code for Muslim women is to protect her from the lustful gaze of men. A Muslim woman should not bring attention to herself in any way. Therefore her dressing should cover her entire body, revealing only the hand and face, the material for her clothing should not be thin where it can be seen through, clothing should be loose and should not reveal her shape, the clothing should not resemble men clothing (which simply mean she should not try to imitate, act or cause her self to look masculine does not mean she can not wear pants). Many Muslim woman wear the niqab (a veil which covers the face) to assist in her modesty. Wearing of the niqab (veil) is not mandatory in Islam for women. Many people feel that Muslim women are oppressed due to the way we dress that is far from true. As a Muslim woman I am not oppress. I don’t dress to please my husband, parent, family, spiritual leader, or society. I dress to please my Lord, become closer to my Lord and safe guard myself. Men also have to be modest in their attire. His attire should be loose fitted. He must ensure that he covers from the navel to his knees however he must also cover at least one shoulder when offering salat (prayer). In conclusion Allah (God) has given us guidance via the Holy Quran and Sunnah along with commonsense to apply these in our everyday life. Allah (God) is not irrational and understands the weakness within mankind the hadith by Sahih Al-Bukhari is proof of this Narrated (Abu Huraira): The Prophet said, "Religion (Islam) is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by offering the prayers in the mornings, afternoons and during the last hour of the night."
