Isnt this utterly magnificent? I get a lot of my ideas for abstract paintings from reactions like these. And they remind me of The Wizard of Whitmore! When we were at Penn State, every year in the spring they would hold a Campus weekend, when many of the departments held open houses with entertaining activities ( Mostly the sciences. I guess the English department wasnt considered to be much fun!) Howie and I always went; we panned for gold, toured the massive mineral collections of the geology department, got to use an amazing electron microscope, and spent most of one day at the Penn State weather center, which, at that time, was the home base for The Weather Channel. We met several of their weathermen who are still on TV--and even roomed with the wife of one of them when we both had our babies--but thats another story. Best of all, we got to see The Wizard of Whitmore. Whitmore was a general science building, and the Wizard was one of the most popular of science profs. When, in class, he performed neat demos of such reactions as this film shows, he actually dressed up in a cone hat and a robe covered with astronomy symbols like the sorcerer in Disneys Sorcerers Apprentice cartoon (nice with his long white hair!)-- and put on a heck of a show. He did an hour performance for one of those Campus Weekends. One of our most memorable hours from our ten years at Penn State!
