Issue 10: The future tense is very subtle. Story presented by Ajarn Don For example: we use present continuous to describe the future I am cooking dinner tomorrow night. You are cooking dinner tomorrow night. He is cooking dinner tomorrow night. She is cooking dinner tomorrow night. They are cooking dinner tomorrow night. Yes – that is correct – we can use present continuous to describe future events. With the future tense, there are many ways to say thing, for example: 1. I will cook dinner tomorrow night. 2. I am cooking dinner tomorrow night. 3. I am going to cook dinner tomorrow night. However, sometimes, native speakers use 2 or 3 when they have planned ahead, and are excited about the particular future event. So, in the example above: if a native speaker has planned ahead (i.e. looked at recipes and bought the food from the market) and he is excited about cooking for his friends, then he usually says number 2 or 3. There is nothing wrong with using “I will”. However, if you say it quietly (with no excitement in your voice) then your friends might ask you questions, such as: “really?” and “have you bought the food yet?” Now, here is the real subtle part; if you say “I will cook dinner tomorrow night” and you say it very confidently, then that will be taken as your promise to cook for everyone. Your friends will know you are 100% sure you are going to cook dinner for them. Yes it is very subtle indeed. So, be careful when saying “I will” very confidently, because people will expect you to do what you say.
