Issues Lightning Alert 200; All of Caldwell, NW Burke, West Burke, All of Caldwell until 9:15pm At 7:30pm Doppler radar indicated heavy rain and thunderstorms developing/Expanding over All of McDowell County, in Western Burke County, and all of Caldwell. Lightning will become likely over the next 30min in alerted areas. This alert will likely need to be expanded to cover more territory in the next hour. A lightning alert means that dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes are possible in and around the alerted area. It does not mean that the strongest part of the storm will hit your area. This alert should be used for heightened awareness of lightning strikes that could cause injury or permanent body damage if outdoors. People in and around the alerted area should seek shelter indoors, away from windows, off ridge tops, and away from isolated high objects. Unplug unnecessary electronics and appliances to avoid them being damaged from a power surge.
