It almost never comes full and textured and as it will stand. For me it arrives piece-meal, scattered, thrown-cards messy, and confused. A lot of the time it looks scarily pedestrian, flat, un-musical, of else straining so hard for effect that it blurs, becomes more about me than itself. More about what I can do with English sentences and less about the sentences themselves, which, if I can be stubborn and pitted and lucky enough, will disappear, and the reader will only have my people contending with whatever trouble they are in. This is so tremendously hard, trying with all this daily travail, to make it look as though it has been easy as breathing.
