It amazes this page that the Transport Minister cannot see that this takeover of public transport is failing, this not fault of the new command. It is the fault of the Police hierarchy and the politician who designed this takeover. If you remove some think then you need to be able to replace it as fast as you remove it, that way no gap will appear. When the takeover rumours first start you had an authorised strength of security on public transport of 900 and operational strength of 750. In the13mths after the introduction of the Police Transport Command the Police have only been able to recruit 1 extra officers to there operational status of 300 when there authorised strength is 400. Whilst the Transit Function has lost approximatley 460 officers from there authorised strength of 600 leaving an operational strength of 140, You now only have an operational strength of 440 (Police & Transits). This has left a massive hole in the safety and the security of the railways and the government has share in the blame. In recent reports in the media the incidents of Assaults on the railways have risen to three a day and Graffiti is up by 10%, at the present time there is no other data availble for other offences but it is beleaved that all other offences are on the rise. A passenger told a local newspaper that violent and drunken teens boarded the train to the city carrying bottles and casks of wine at about 8.40pm on the Monday night. More revellers jumped on when it arrived at Sutherland at 9.10pm. As the train continued towards Redfern bottles were thrown across the carriage, fights broke out and newspapers torn up and strewn about. Because it was an express service, passengers were unable to leave the train until Redfern. One distressed woman, 60, had to be escorted by a train guard through the carriages to the last carriage, where she called police. Does this sound like the take over is working Minister when you can only get two Police officers to a train on Monday night.
