It amuses me: results come in and previously award winning images - TopicsExpress

It amuses me: results come in and previously award winning images fail to get acceptances and out they come: the folk who are offended! Those who think they are owed an acceptance or an award, just because the image has gained these in previous salons. Dont they understand!? Exhibitions, as is my opinion anyway, are a whole different ball game to accreditations. Accreditations and qualifications show proficiency to a set standard...but exhibitions accept works that are yes A) to a certain standard and within a current fashion to a degree, but are also B) restricted by confinements of the salon. That is to say the exhibition may be restricted by physical space and so only a specific number of prints may be able to be displayed at the venue. There are other variables too that contribute to the acceptance level and so the images are not only being judged on their standard of execution of skill and technical ability and on their appeal and instant impact, but also on the restraints placed on the judge only being able to accept a certain number of each genre, for e.g....so many variables may be completely outside your control as the author. Do I get the hump? Nah, not any more! I plod on. Keep on putting them in and hopefully improve the quality of my output by taking on board the critique and feedback from various places and the scores hopefully go up, gradually! Occasionally I may coincide with the criteria of a BPE salon and gain an acceptance or more and feel great! More often Ill hit the target in a PSA or a FIAP salon and get more of a boost. But more importantly, Ill continue to evaluate my work and consider its relevance within different arenas and push myself to improve. Who judges my work best? Whoever is most appropriate within the showcase I have submitted it to. And it is on that basis that I must taylor its improvement. The whole trick is to realise that there are many platforms on which to launch your images to the outside world and if a piece is not ideally suited to one it is certainly not to say it is not an award winner in another!! So, if like me, you drew another blank this time around, dont think its because your images are not any good at all; theres more to it than hitting a standard. No one knows where the bar is to be set until all entries are in and then theres the variables you cant control to take into account! Just keep trying to improve your own game:-)
