It appears to me that re-escalation of Karabakh conflict is somehow related to western pressure on Putin. It seems like a response of Russia because Karabakh is one of the easiest conflicts Russia is able to manipulate. Two armies have been standing face to face for 20 years with almost no results in peace negotiations. Sporadic shootouts and casualties occured in the past as well but never to such a degree, which raises suspicions about the sources of recent violence. The aim might be twofold: to force Armenia and Azerbaijan to join Eurasian Union (Armenia already declared in the past that it would) and to respond to the West by jeopardizing its crucial investments in the Caspian region. In the meanwhile, more people dying everyday, but certainly the target country/government is Azerbaijan.
