It became obvious to me that after Rita Jeptoo failed a recent drug test, not everybody posting to a comment on that news understood the process by which elite athletes are tested and what happens if they are caught. The following RWD article by Alison Wade is long and a bit complicated, but it does an excellent job of explaining the process. For instance, the Chicago Marathon tests all its elite athletes before the race as well as the top finishers after. The system is not perfect. Look how long Lance Armstrong avoided being caught. But the testers are getting better at it, plus penalties will increase in 2015. Now, get caught and you get banned for two years; soon that will go to four. Interesting to me was this list of the American runners tested most frequently in 2013: Galen Rupp(28 times), Dathan Ritzenhein (21), Shalane Flanagan (20), Meb Keflezighi (18),Lopez Lomong (18), Adriana Pirtea-Nelson (17), Matt Tegenkamp (17), Nick Symmonds (15), Kara Goucher (15), and Bernard Lagat (15).
