"It costs me more to be free than a life in the pen. Making money off of cuss words, writing again..." ~ Tupac Shakur R.I.P. The Louisiana State Penitentiary, more commonly known as ANGOLA, is a prison farm in Louisiana operated by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections. It is the largest maximum security prison in the United States with over 5,000 offenders and 1,800 staff members. It is located on an 18,000-acre property that was once a plantation owned by Isaac Franklin; directly adjacent to the Mississippi state line. In 1880, Major James purchased an 8,000-acre plantation in West Feliciana Parish called Angola, formerly owned by Franklin and named after the area in Africa where the former slaves came from (angolamuseum.org/?q=History). In 2010 the prison had 5,100 inmates and 1,700 employees. In 2010, the racial composition of the inmates was 69% white, 31% black; 71% of inmates were serving a life sentence and 1.6% had been sentenced to death.
