It had been a long Council day and night and I was just nodding off in bed when JD yelled from the kitchen, where he was baking brownies, Joel, come here! Even half asleep, I knew it was too soon after he started for there to be finished brownies awaiting me. I considered for a few moments playing possum but then got up and dragged into the kitchen. Go stand by the microwave. I complied and shuffled over. (There were still no brownies for me) I keep hearing this noise... its like... like... water is running... but... also.... I listened a few moments, then finished for him,... but theres also a rhythmic hum? Yeah! Like, say, oh, a dishwasher? glancing with exaggeration at the dishwasher Id seen him load and HE started a half hour earlier. He started to say no but then popped open the door of our German-engineered dishwasher, which until that point had been making the same faint noise it had for the last 10 years. After a few moments of the fading sound of water trickling off glasses and dishes, followed by a miraculous silence, he turned and flashed me his dont look at me like that look.
